I am certainly not an expert in sending InMail’s through LinkedIn. I’ve been doing them for a long time, and I am always learning what works and what doesn’t.

Writing InMail’s when I was with the bank was reasonably straightforward. I had a successful brand behind me, now it’s just me and my business, and it’s different. I don’t have that type of brand recognition YET.

When I first started the business, my InMail’s were terrible! No fluff, just business. I also needed to check the profile better. I was targeting the wrong type of person for my search. This is a pet peeve of mine, and here I was, doing just that! And I was pretty off. I was looking for a Credit Analyst and was reaching out to Portfolio Managers. Different positions and the wrong career trajectory.

I’ve learned be more personable and make sure the profile matches the search. It is also very helpful to have a presence on LinkedIn. Your picture needs to be friendly looking, you should have reputable connections, and a website or at least a company page on LinkedIn.

Following these tips is a fantastic start. Let me know if you have any others that you would like to share!
